The use of herbs and spices to enhance the health giving properties of food has been practiced for generations. The flavours and aromas of herbs and spices have characterised many exotic varieties of foods around the world.
Many cultures still add specific herbs to food for specific health conditions. For example in India turmeric may be added to a yoghurt drink to aid digestion.

Various herbs have been scientifically tested and found to have specific medicinal properties. An example is garlic, known as ''Russian penecillin'' because it has powerful antiseptic properties.

Visiting a herbalist involves enquiry into various health conditions experienced in the past as well as the current health complaint, as there may be an association.

A specific combination of herbs may be chosen for a condition, designed to enhance the body's ability to combat disease, fight off infection or normalise and stabilise optimum function, such as in allergies, hormonal imbalance or adrenal fatigue.
The herbs contain substances which nourish and enhance the body's own ability to function at its best. Plants contain substances which the body uses to rebuild strength and health, and restore balance to the body's inherant ''vital force'' needed for good health and energy.

The herbs may be prescribed as a tincture, a herb tea or as capsules. A herb tincture contains concentrated extracts of the herbs and is taken diluted with water or apple juice twice a day. Herb teas may also be prescribed, which can be taken as required during the day, with a slice of lemon, or a spoonful of honey if desired.
Herbal syrups may be prescribed to soothe irritating coughs and colds. Creams or ointments such as Comfrey, Marigold, Echinacea and Chickweed cream are some examples.
